Excursions – 2018 (see also the Newsletter)
Priority will be given to members. Non members will be charged £2.00 when attending events free to members and will be charged the same amount as members on excursions where charges are made.
NB. There may be car parking charges in public car parks that members will need to pay on the day.Map references of where we meet are linked to an OS map with a blue circle showing where to meet. Use the controls on the map to change the scale or to scroll around the area.

Saturday May 26th Full day Excursion to the Bala Area CANCELLED 18/05/2018 due to low interest

Please arrive at Bala by 10.00am at the Car Park by the lake (SH920 355, LL23 7YE). We will then take a minibus to Carndochan, Llywelyn Fawr’s castle now cleared and better displayed as result of work by Dave Hopewell who will be our guide. We will also visit Caer Gai Roman Fort on our return to Bala. Find own lunch in Bala returning to car park at time appointed. We will then drive in our own cars to visit the ‘invisible’ Roman fort at Llanfor and discuss the remarkable geophysical evidence revealed by a series of surveys in the last few years.
Depending on time we may visit Llanfor churchyard (church closed SH938 366, LL23 7DT) and one or more of the three Mottes in the vicinity. Frongoch (WW1 POW camp for Irish republicans) could be visited on the way home (A4212, SH904 392, LL23 7NT).

Saturday June 16th Afternoon Visit to the Dwyran Area

2.00 pm Assemble on N verge of A4080 opposite Bryn Gwyn Hall to visit (footpath) the remains of the Bryn Gwyn Circle, recently excavated by Georg Smith who will be our guide (SH460 667, LL61 6UT). Drive forward to Maes y Porth (SH456 654, LL61 6RF – sign-posted Anglesey Riding Centre) where we are the guests of Mr and Mrs Lea Wilson to see the walled garden and the recent restoration work there, and in the house. Documents relating to the history of the house will be on view.

Wednesday June 27th Evening Visit to Llanwenllwyfo new church and Llaneilian church.

Share cars if possible and assemble at the Llanwenllwyfo Church at 6 pm (SH477 894, LL70 9LZ).
Mrs Avril Lloyd will speak about the church and the famous stained glass windows. The book about them by Martin Crampin will be available for sale (£10). After a cup of tea we will drive to Llaneilian church (SH469 928, LL68 9LT).

Saturday July 14th Afternoon in Llangadwaladr and Aberffraw

Assemble at 2.00 pm at Llangadwaladr Church (SH383 692, LL62 5LA). After the visit we will drive to the car park by the bridge at Aberffraw (SH357 690) and Andrew Davidson will lead a walk around the village to the church and the possible Llys site to the north. We will also note Mesolithic and Roman sites in passing. We will finally go to Llys Llewelyn Tea Rooms (SH469 928,LL63 5BQ) for tea and a talk by Gerallt Llewelyn Jones on this successful Social Enterprise development.

Wednesday September 5th Afternoon visit to Gloddaeth and Bodysgallen, Llandudno

Assemble at 2.00 pm at Gloddaeth (sign-posted off A470 as St David’s College, SH802 807, LL30 1RD) where we will visit the splendidly preserved 16th century hall of Gloddaeth.
Then we will go to nearby Bodygallen (Hotel SH798 793, LL30 1RS) to tour the gardens (with the gardener) and then take tea in the 16th century great hall there and see the remains of the original Mostyn house.
