Excursion to Holyhead Breakwater Quarry Park

Entering Holyhead by road, do NOT turn left by the Cenotaph but carry on along Land\u2019s End, pass beneath the Celtic Bridge and follow the road to its end when it curves naturally left along Prince of Wales Road. Continue on this road. When you reach the fourth shelter on the promenade on the right, there is a left turn signposted to the Breakwater Park. Take this road until you reach a wide gate on the right. (The road is narrow in certain sections). The gate has a notice on it saying \u201cStena Line Private Property\u201d. Ignore the sign and turn right through this gate. Park near the yellow sign saying \u201cNo Fly Tipping\u201d. We meet at this point for a talk on the Breakwater and its construction and a short walk to view Soldier\u2019s Point.
Returning to the cars, we make our way onwards to the Breakwater Park itself. There is a caf\u00e9 there and also public toilets. We will be met by the Park Warden, Mr William Stewart who will explain the significance of the site. Then the AAS members will be offered a choice \u2013 either a guided ascent of the quarry incline and a visit to the North Stack Fog Station and the Iron-age hill-fort (this is a steep, lengthy and rocky walk), or join our guided tour which will visit a notable gun, the site of shipwrecks, the Explosives Store (not normally open to visitors) and the source of the stone used to build the breakwater. There will also be ample opportunities to traverse the many footpaths and note the rich ecology, and to call in at the exhibitions in the restored quarry buildings.
The walk is a straightforward one and very accessible. However, if you do choose to ascend the incline towards North Stack, correct footwear and clothing should be brought with you.<\/p>\n
