Centenary Celebrations 2011/12
An exhibition “Hanes yr Hynafiaethwyr / Antiquarian Anglesey” celebrating 100 years of the Anglesey Antiquarian Society and Field Club was displayed in the History Gallery at Oriel Ynys Môn over the period 16 July – 24 December 2011 (Extended to 21 January 2012).
The exhibition told the story, through photos, artefacts and text, of the development of understanding Anglesey’s history and pre-history/archaeology. The Society’s contribution towards this understanding was highlighted.
The Society gratefully acknowledges sponsorship and support by Magnox UK, Menter Môn and Oriel Ynys Môn towards the cost of mounting the exhibition and associated literature.
The display panels and exhibition booklet were produced for the Society by Robert Williams. of MAGMA Designs.
Events were organised at two of Anglesey’s outstanding historic houses, Plas Newydd and Plas Coch.
On Saturday 5th November a Day Conference was held in the Music Room at Plas Newydd
The speakers were:
- David Longley – The Long Sixth Century: Maelgwyn to Cadwallon – Anglesey and its wider connections
- Professor Ralph Griffiths – Anglesey and the wider world 1300-1550. (Paper read by Ann Benwell)
- Dr David Jenkins- The rule of the Copper Kingdom.
- Peter Lord – Artisan painting from Wales to America 1720-1860: Edward Owen of Penrhos to Williams Roos of Amlwch.
On Sunday 6 November a Heritage Slow Food and History Lunch was held at Plas Coch, a unique 16th Century Elizabethan Mansion, courtesy of Plas Coch’s owners, with the support of Menter Môn, Bwtri and Slow Food Dros-y-Fenai.
